The Woodward Relays began in 1973 with the first outdoor track invitational at Judge Charles W. Woodward High School in Bethesda. The following year the cross-country event was added. In 1986, upon the closure of Woodward High School, the events were moved around until they finally found a home at Walter Johnson High School. The events were held there until 2007 when they were moved to the present home at Georgetown Preparatory School.
